Overview

Blue Drop Labs was built to partner with design agencies. Agencies win the work with vision, brand, and a relationship the client trusts. What they often do not carry in house is a full engineering bench: people who can build the site, run the content management system, wire up the marketing technology, and stay on call after launch. That is the part we do, and we do it as part of the agency's team rather than as a second vendor the client has to manage.

Our longest-running partnership of this kind is with Kudos Design Collaboratory, an award-winning, purpose-driven design agency in New York that works with leading brands, institutions, artists, museums, universities, and nonprofits. Kudos brings design leadership and strategic vision. Blue Drop brings software engineering, content management, and marketing technology. Together we have shipped projects for Cornell University and for celebrity chef Chris Shepherd, and we are the technical backup when Kudos's technical director is out of the office.

How the partnership works

The division of labor is deliberate and it does not move from project to project. Kudos owns the client relationship, the creative direction, the brand system, and the user experience. Blue Drop owns everything that has to be engineered: the build, the CMS and its editorial workflows, integrations, hosting, and the marketing technology that connects a site to the tools a client's team already runs.

In practice that means we sit in Kudos's project meetings, estimate alongside their designers, and build to their design system rather than to our own preferences. The client sees one team with one plan. Kudos gets an engineering partner it can put in front of any client, and the confidence to pitch work that is bigger than its own bench.

Two overlapping circles: a Lavender circle for Kudos with design leadership, brand and identity, strategy and vision, UX and UI; a Sky circle for Blue Drop Labs with engineering depth, software engineering, content management, marketing technology; the overlap is labeled one team; a ledger reads Cornell University AAP, Chris Shepherd, technical backup

Cornell University: Architecture, Art, and Planning

Cornell's College of Architecture, Art, and Planning is the kind of client Kudos does its best work for: an institution with a strong point of view, a large body of faculty research and student work to present, and departments, admissions, and programs that all need a place on the same site. Kudos led the design and the storytelling. Blue Drop engineered the platform behind it, from the content model that lets a college of this size publish without a bottleneck to the templates that keep the design intact as the site grows.

A university website is never finished, so the more important part of the engagement is what happens after launch. New programs, events, and research pages arrive every week, and the site has to absorb them without a designer or a developer in the loop each time. That is what a well-built content management system does, and it is where an engineering partner earns its place on an agency team.

A marketing site for chef Chris Shepherd

Chris Shepherd is a James Beard Award-winning chef, author, and founder of the Southern Smoke Foundation. His site has to do several jobs at once: sell his cookbook and speaking engagements, point people to his restaurants and the foundation, and carry a personality that is anything but bland. Kudos designed a site that is all typography and attitude, with the kind of oversized type and motion that only works when the build is exact.

Blue Drop built it to that standard: an editorial CMS Chris's team can update without touching the design, pages for hiring, events, and published writing, and a contact path that lands in the right inbox. The result is a marketing site that looks like a design piece and behaves like a business tool.

Technical backup when the technical director is out

Kudos has a technical director who knows every platform the agency has shipped. Every agency with one person in that seat has the same exposure: when that person is on vacation, out sick, or simply booked solid, client requests and production issues wait. Blue Drop removes that exposure. We hold the context on Kudos's platforms, we have access and a repeatable deployment path for each of them, and when the technical director is out of the office we pick up support, fixes, and releases so nothing stalls and no client notices a gap.

That coverage is not a courtesy. It is part of how the partnership is structured, and it is one of the reasons Kudos can make commitments to its clients about response times that a small technical team could not otherwise keep.

Why design agencies partner with Blue Drop

We are not a design agency and we do not compete with the agencies we work with. Our design practice is built to collaborate with an agency's creative direction, not replace it. What we add is depth in the parts of a project that decide whether the design survives contact with reality: software engineering, content management systems including Drupal and WordPress, marketing technology, hosting, and the maintenance that keeps a site healthy for years.

For an agency that means a larger bench without a larger payroll, engineering estimates you can put in a proposal, a partner who shows up to client meetings, and coverage when your own technical lead is unavailable. For the client it means one team, one plan, and a site that is as well built as it is well designed.
