Overview
BoatTEST.com is where boaters go before they buy: thousands of boat and engine reviews, factory tours, and performance tests, all on a Drupal site the business depends on for its revenue. In 2023 its owners opened a hosting renewal from Upsun, then still Platform.sh, and found a bill for twice what they had been paying, for the same service.
The timing could not have been worse. Like a lot of media businesses, BoatTEST had seen revenue hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, and it was being squeezed at exactly the moment it needed room. It is a pattern we see often in Drupal hosting: a company grows, stays loyal, and gets penalized for both at renewal.
Blue Drop Labs took over BoatTEST's hosting that year. The move to our managed Drupal hosting on DigitalOcean and Cloudflare cut the bill to half of what BoatTEST had been paying before the increase, made the site four times faster, and removed the platform restrictions that had been blocking the custom revenue reports built by BoatTEST's original web development vendor.
The renewal that doubled
Nothing about the site had changed. The traffic was the same, the Drupal site was the same, and the support was the same. What changed was the price: a renewal quote at twice the previous year, presented as the cost of continuing.
For a business already absorbing a pandemic downturn, a hosting bill that doubles is not a line item, it is a decision about what else has to give. BoatTEST's owners wanted a host that would price the work being done, not the fact that they were unlikely to leave.
The move: managed Drupal hosting, at half the price
We migrated BoatTEST off Upsun onto Blue Drop managed hosting: DigitalOcean underneath for compute and managed services, Cloudflare at the edge for caching, DNS, and DDoS protection. The site runs on infrastructure defined in code, monitored around the clock, with security updates and backups handled by the same engineers who built it.
Pricing is flat and predictable. There are no overage penalties for a good month of traffic, and no renewal surprises. BoatTEST's annual hosting cost landed at half of what it had been paying before the increase, a quarter of the renewal quote.

Four times faster
A review site lives on page speed: readers arrive from search, from video, and from boat-show floors on a phone, and they leave if a spec sheet takes too long to load. On the new platform, pages respond four times faster than they did on the previous host. Caching at the Cloudflare edge serves repeat requests before they reach Drupal, and the Drupal environment itself is tuned for the site rather than shared with someone else's.
The revenue reports that finally ran
BoatTEST's original web development vendor had built custom revenue reports into the site. On the previous platform they could not run as designed: restrictions on what the environment allowed kept blocking them, and workarounds never quite held.
On Blue Drop hosting, the environment is BoatTEST's own. We worked with the original vendor to remove the restrictions, and the reports now run the way they were built to. That matters beyond the reports themselves: it means the people who know the site best can keep improving it without asking the host for permission.
Loyalty should not cost more
BoatTEST is one of several Drupal businesses we have moved away from enterprise hosts after a renewal that punished growth or tenure. The pattern is the same each time: the platform was fine, the price was not, and the leverage was the assumption that migrating would be too painful to attempt.
It is not. A managed migration is a few weeks of planned work with no downtime for readers, and the result is a host that prices the service, answers the phone, and lets your team change the site. That conviction is why we built Blue Drop Cloud, and it is why BoatTEST is still with us.
Did your last hosting renewal double? It does not have to.
